With strong connections to Black Butter records, Bristol duo My Nu Leng are making a name for themselves with their production and remixing talents. With an appearance at Baltic Block Party fast approaching, Ashley Manning caught up with them to see what’s been happening so far this year.
One of your more recent ventures was going on tour with Monki and Friends earlier this year. How was it?
We have loved working with Monki over the last year, from writing music together at Red Bull Studios or playing shows in Leeds and London. She has serious talent behind the decks and we look forward to catching any shows we have together!
You’ve just released your third EP, Masterplan, for Black Butter Records, and following its success, what direction would you like to take next?
Our aim is to keep pushing our darker, moodier sound, but to reach to a broader audience and really push our image of dance music as far as we can!
Your music is often very difficult to categorise, so how would you both describe it?
We prefer to steer clear of categorising it in to any certain box and hope that elements of House, Drum & Bass, Dubstep, Garage and Grime are all recognisable in our music.
So you’ve got quite a busy year ahead of you and you’ve just secured a spot on Rudimental’s Boat Party at Hideout Festival this summer- but do you prefer small scale sets to the bigger festivals?
Both types of shows are completely different, we have come from playing basement parties to 100 people to potentially playing to 20,000 at Exit Festival this year. Each individual show is special to us and we put all our energy in to making sure whoever catches our set leaves with an urge to find out more about us.
Finally, as you’re making your way over to Liverpool for the Baltic Block Party pretty soon, what can we expect from your set?
We try to showcase what our favourite music is currently, pushing new unknown talent and sometimes throwing in some unexpected classics along the way. Expect a lot of tracks, fast paced and a lot of fun… we can’t wait!
MY NU LENG will be at the Block Party taking place all around Liverpool’s Baltic Triangle area on Friday 30th May
